My problem

I am new to knitting and im having a problem that seems rare. I have searched this site and all over the web and cant find my answer. :??
anyway. after I cast-on how ever many stitches I need ,you go on to start knitting the first row…right? or second row whatever its considered…lol. well my first few rolls I knit my string in the middle(between the needles) gets longer and longer until it tangles so bad I have to quit. I cant even figure out where the extra string is coming from. once I get going im fine, but why in the world is my string in between the needles getting longer when I first start? please any advice would be welcomed.

What kind of cast on are you using?

i use my index finger. I wrap the working yarn around my index finger and go under and through …if that make sense?

That may be the problem. A loose cast on will give you loose stitches on the first rows that separate.

I would suggest you try the long-tail cast on. It works really well. There are some other cast on videos under the basic techniques tab above, too.
