My hat is too big!

I love this hat I knit from a Lucy Neatby pattern last year…but it doesn’t work too well in cold winter, cuz it’s a tad too big for my big head (seriously).

I want to shrink it, (it’s wool with some angora) but is there a way to control the amount of shrinkage? Or…what else could I do to make it fit around my ears better? (sorry to scare you with my ugly mug so early in the morning).

Woodi, I’d be worried, trying to shrink your wool hat. Chances are it would ‘felt’ and not be stretchy at all.

I think I’d try to find some rolled elastic cord and weave it around the inside of the rim - maybe above the rim too. Then draw it up to fit your head. Tie, knot and trim the ends. It should snug up the hat nicely.

I’ve seen this kind of colored elastic on many knitted things in stores. Have no idea how it lasts but it should be simple to snip, pull out and replace if necessary. Better than losing your hat in the wind.

Or you could knit some more ribbing around the outer edge with smaller needles

I agree, Ingrid. That’s a good fix for the problem, however, Woodi’s hat appears to have a curling garter stitch brim. Could be too long if she adds ribbing.

How about picking up stitches on the sides and knitting ear flaps and I-cord ties? Then Woodi, can tie that sucker on nice and tight. Jean

Thanks Ladies! I haven’t got any more of the yarn to knit earflaps with, although I think that’s a great idea!

I will look for some elastic to weave around. Will bring the hat to my local LYS and see what they have for me there.

You may find the elastic thread in the sewing notions section of a fabric or craft store.
