My grandmothers knitting bag

I was at my moms house tonight and I took my knitting with me. She told me that my grandmother, who died when my mom was just 15 loved to knit. She then went into another room and brought out a knitting bag/basket thingie!

It is so cool! It had a sweater my mom wore in high school in it, a couple of needles and pattern books!!!

The best part… my mom said I could have it all. I    my mom.

Here are a few pictures. I will probably scan the pattern books if anyone is interested. There are some great patterns in them

That’s awesome! That’s the kind of knitting bag I’d like.

Congrats on the great new addition to your knitting family.

What a treasure!

Very cool!

It’s so nice to have a link to the past in that way. When my grandmother died, I was 20, and I only knit a little. I still had enough forethought to know that I would want all of her knitting stuff, so I took her many needles and crochet hooks, as well as almost a trunk full of yarn. I’m so glad I did.

That is so cool!!! A woman that is in my knitting group recently brought in a bunch of her mom’s knitting stuff that she had found in a box. There were some really cool patterns- argyle sweaters knit on size 2 needles-

What a wonderful thing to be able to have your grandmother’s knitting bag!

that is soooooo cool!

Fantastic! It’s so nice to have something like that.

I’m only 51 but I remember those knitting bags!! :XX: :XX:

I got all my Nana’s knitting stuff. She died about 10 years ago and I only starting knitting in Janauary so I got to pull it all out. She had a knitting book in there from the 40’s. Its great to have her needles and stuff and I think of her when I use them. She must have known something I didn’t when she gave me that stuff. I am sure she is smiling down   when I am knitting, just as I am sure your grandmom is too.

I just cant get over this bag… its old and needs a good cleaning… but I love it!!

I do have a question about the sweater that was in it… it feels like wool to me, its a wonderful ivory color with thick and thin texture to it. My mom said she remembers washing it after her mom died and it shrunk something awful, I was wondering, would it be possible to try and reblock it? I’ll take picture of it tonight.

I guess it depends on how much it shrank- or, if the washing didn’t felt the fibers together too much, you could recycle the yarn and use it for something new- if you can’t use the sweater as it is.

My mom had one of those! I wonder what happened to it. She probably gave it away since my dad made her a cedar octagon shaped knitting box that has holes in the top for her thread to run through. Speaking of which I haven’t seen that one in a while. I think I need to go prowl around in their attic

Here is the sweater. I think its wool… I tried burning one of the lint balls… and it just burned, didnt melt.

It doesnt look too felted to me, but then I’m not too sure what felted really looks like. As for recyling the yarn, I might ask my mom what she thinks. I’d hate to surprise her with a new scarf or something only to hurt her feelings.

I took these in natural light.

It only looks felted from wear. The rest doesn’t look felted at all. What a sweet sweater!
