My first plushie!

i have decided to knit my first plushie as a surprise thank you to an illustrator named aaron meshon. my plan is to re-create one of his characters, in plush form! kid robot recently came out with a line of zipper pulls using his characters, so i do have a sort of 3D version to go by (although it is tiny):

the character i plan to knit is the double-popsicle guy on the left. i plan to make him about 3" across, 6" tall, and 1" thick, and i think i am going to use real popsicle sticks instead of knitting them.

here is where i need help - should i knit him in the round and somehow shape him while filling him, or should i knit separate pieces for the front, back, sides, and bottom, and then join them? if i do the latter, i think it would be best to do two side pieces and have them join in the middle of the top (so, each popsicle “bump” would be part of the side, with the join between the bumps). i am leaning toward knitting the pieces separately, because i think that it will give him a more defined shape. what do you all think?
