My first pattern--help!?

Thanks in advance! Afraid to start…pattern sez: Beg at waist, cast on 87 sts. Beg with a knit row, work 2 rows in stocking st

I read: do long tail co (which is the first knit row) so I only have to purl the next row, right?

Then later pattern sez: shape crotch: Inc 1 st each end of next and following alt rows twice. Purl one row. Next row: cast on 5. Knit to end of row

I read: inc 1 st at the start AND end of a row? (It sez EACH end…or does that mean every end of the row? But the “following alt rows” twice? Lost now…

No, the co is a co, not the first row. Do the long tail cast on, knit the next row, purl the row after that.

You’re right, inc a stitch a both ends of the row, beginning and end. `following alt rows’ is every other row, so you will end up with 3 increase rows altogether. Inc row, p row, inc row, p row, inc row, p row. Increases are almost always done on the RS or knit rows.

Sometimes my brain’s working and I have time to explain things. Sometimes I’m in a rush and just give the quick and dirty answer which doesn’t always help… :wink:
