My fingers hurt from knitting

I am using a size 6ish needle while making a baby blanket. My index and middle fingers hurt on my left hand and my ring finger hurts on my right hand. I have them all taped up with bandaids and have even gone as far as to put small pieces of cardboard in the in between the bandaid and the fingers so I have a sort of brace going on.

What can I do to make the process easier on my fingers (without going through a box of bandaids a week)?

Thank you!

sounds like maybe crafter’s gloves would help you… specifically the supportive/stress-relief type. http://www.joann.com/search?q=craft%20glove has some examples. my mom uses them off and on for her sewing/quilting because they prevent/relieve fatigue, and as a bonus act as a guard against scissor/blade/pin accidents.

Which style of knitting do you do? Are you knitting really tight? What weight yarn are you using and how many stitches to the inch in your gauge? Have you got something like arthritis or carpal tunnel that’s being aggravated?

Thank you, XTopherCB. I didn’t know that they made gloves for crafting. Problem being that it’s the first knuckles in my fingers (knuckles below the fingernail) and the gloves don’t appear to be long enough to cover those knuckles. But I’ll keep them in mind!

GrumpyGramma - I don’t know which style of knitting I do. It’s very basic; garter stitch. I wind the yarn around my middle finger on my left hand. I am knitting around six stitches per inch. I tend to bang on the keyboard while typing, so maybe I am being too hard while knitting?

That sounds like Continental style knitting which is what Amy is doing in this video. http://www.knittinghelp.com/video/play/knit-stitch-close-up I know you know how to do knit stitches, it’s just to show what Continental style is. If you’re using worsted weight yarn and getting 6 stitches to the inch, that’s tight. Loosening up your tension would help. When I knit tighter my hands would hurt. If I insist on using small needles for my yarn which I sometimes do because I want the knitting tighter they hurt.
