My Daughter Knit me a Scarf

Visited with my daughter today and got presented with a scarf she had made from some yarn she had on hand. I wasn’t expecting her to finish it… she hasn’t been known for finishing things… but she did finish it.
She doesn’t really know any knitting rules so consequently the scarf is not done ‘straight’. It’s fat at one end and skinny at the other; it’s all knit in garter with the exceptions of the areas that are ruffle’y. I asked her how she did that and she didn’t know.
She said she had gotten tired of just knitting so she ‘experimented’. The scarf is artfully full of holes and one end of it looks rather intricate to say the least.
IT starts out with varigated yarn and ends in a lovely medium blue.
Like I said she doesn’t really know how to knit but she added one feature that I would not have thought of but will from now on…
She didn’t know what to do with the ends of the yarn when she was finished so she just left one hanging (which I wove in when I got home) but the other one, she made into a loop and tied it off. She added a button to the other side of the scarf so that the scarf looped at that end - hard to explain.
But then she showed me how she envisioned it… you do up the button in it’s button hole to make one end loop and then pass the other end of the scarf thru it… kind of like a keyhole scarf… it looks lovely.
I also discovered, trying it on, that I could turn it into a hoody - sort of, and get part of it to cover my head.
So… it’s a bit unorthodox but I have to say… I love it!
I wore it when I got back home and promptly fell asleep in my chair. It’s a scarf that I didn’t make; it’s a gift from my daughter and I had no idea how precious it was going to be to me.

It sound like your daughter gave you a piece of original art work knit with love.

I would love to see a picture.

Awwwww… That’s pretty cool.

That is truly a gift of love and is very sweet!

How lovely to receive a hand-knitted gift, a treasure, from your daughter!

Hopefully, I haven’t forgotten how to add a pic to this site…
Here goes…

Very cool looking scarf!! I love unconventional things. You have a truly unique item that was made by someone who loves you and whom you love. You just can’t beat that!!

Thanks for posting the picture.

Oh, what a treasure! Every time you wear it, see it, think about it, you’ll be reminded of your daughter’s cloud9 love. Nothing can beat that.

Look at that!!! What an awesome scarf…:muah:

Very awesome scarf, made with love :star:

Great story, great gift! old is your daughter? (I’m guessing early twenties?)

When she finally learns to knit well (after many more projects) she won’t be able to knit lumpy, crooked things like this, which will make it even more of a treasure. I love things that look quite …well, untamed for want of a better word.

BTW: Lotta lovely paintings on the wall behind you - did you do them?

When you were talking about the scarf I was picturing something terrible with giant holes and crazy things! It actually looks fabulous! From the photo I can’t tell of any mistakes (but then again I’m a fairly new knitter) hopefully she enjoyed making it and will continue to knit!

As a new knitter you have yet to learn the great secret of knitting, THERE are NO MISTAKES! We only have unplanned design elements. :woot:

I also create learning experiences, not just unplanned design elements. I multitask! :eyebrow2:

Some, such as GrumpyGramma, are experts and some, such as humble me, are an unknown (X) amount of drips under pressure (spurts).

Oh yeah, I’m an expert…frogger.
