Multiplying Irish hike scarf pattern

I want to use the IHS pattern to make a blanket with 7 cables and a wider border of 6 stitches on the sides. I know the basic pattern is a repeat of 12 so i need 96 stitches, however i have seemed to end up 2 stitches out on the RS by the time i got to Row 4. This is what i had:

Row 1: WS k6, (p2, k2, p6, k2)*7 k6
Row 2 RS k8, p2, k6, p2, (k2, p2, k6, p2)*6 k6
Row 3: repeat row 1
Row 4: repaet row 2

I’m sure i have made the mistake with the adding of the extra stitches to make the border wider but i can’t work it out:wall:

If someone could spell it out for me it would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks,
Mel.b

That should work with 96 sts, I’m not sure what the problem would be. Though I think row 2 might need to end with k8 instead of at the begging. That would fit the pattern better so you get a rib on that edge instead of 8 sts of garter.

Thanks suzeeq, so if i just swap row 2 so it starts k6 and finishes k8 - is that what you mean? Would that make it rib on both edges or garter on one and rib on the other (because that would look strange! ) years ago i started this pattern in a small blanket(having stitched the scarf) and it turned out fine with garter stich at both ends, but i can’t remember how i worked it :frowning:

I’m not sure, it would be reversed from how you have it, though it may work out that way. Just k6 at the start, then p2, k6, p2, (k2, p2, k6, p2)*6 and end with k8. After the first 6 sts, you need to work the rest of them as they appear - knit the ones that look like knits on this row, and purl the ones that look like purls. That way you’ll stick to the rib pattern.

Perfect, thanks!

Not sure what I did with the pattern, but think I accidently left out a couple of stitches when multiplying it as on one end I have the border and then the rib line and the other side I dont have the rib line   You can see in the pic on the left the rib and on the far right, no rib. I’ve only just realised though :wall:

Oh well, I’ve already restarted it three times and I’m not restarting a fourth after doing this much!

It looks fine as it is. You have a knit rib on the left side and none on the right, but call it a modification and keep going.

I like it. It’s a beautiful scarf and no way would I start it over. Think of this as your own signature addition to the pattern.

Oh i plan to keep going! It will be a unique blanket plus I’m much too slow of a knitter to restart (again!)

For future reference though, how do i get that rib row on the right hand side - what do i need to add to the pattern that i posted above? Thanks heaps

You just need a couple more stitches. I think it would be your multiple, plus 2, plus the edge stitches.

Yep, I agree with Sue. Whatever number of stitches you’re doing on that small ridge is the number to add to the pattern.

What a lovely gift! It’s great that you thought to modify this wonderful pattern! I love the IHS!
