More stitch marker help needed

So, I have a question about stitch markers. I bought some really fancy ones (4 for a 1.99) at Jo-Ann’s. There actully jewelry findings (antiquey looking pewter hearts). But I don’t think I am using them right. I am knitting a sock the magic loop way (only one at a time, thank you. I am not that talented), and I am using it to keep track of my rounds. Do I knit one and then place the marker, or do I place the marker and then knit? Why do I feel like I just answered my own question in there somewhere?

If I’m using dpns, I put a marker one stitch in so it doesn’t slide off the point.
If I’m using circs, I put a marker at the beginning of the round. When I stop, I usually stop one stitch before or after the marker so it doesn’t slide off.

So I guess it really doesn’t matter where you put it, as long as you remember if it’s at the beginning or one stitch in.

When I use magic loop, I don’t use a stitch marker at all. I just go by where my tail yarn is. I use long-tail cast on so the tail of the yarn is at the first stitch of the round. I find that easier than bothering with a stitch marker.
