I have attached the latest photos of my duffle coat, I haven’t touched since the last post, still stuck. Can’t visualize the final hood issue. Thanks
trying again with attachment
It’s a good photo but I can’t orient myself. Where is the working yarn? Are the 29sts for the right front on the needle? Have you cast on the sts for the back of the hood yet?
the working yarn is at the point of the needle facing to the left in this photo, I have co the “new” stitches and they are at the end of this needle, when looking at this photo, when I follow the very vague instructions and knit through the 29 stitches on the left it “attaches” both front flaps, this can’t be right/ thanks
Yes, you’re right. You don’t want to attach the two fronts to each other. You don’t want the new sts at the tip end of the needle either. You want to begin by knitting through the right front flap sts (That’s the right as if you were wearing it.) Then you want to cast on sts and finally knit through the sts on the left front. Now you’ll turn and work back on the WS or inside row. The turn at the end of the row is so that the front flaps don’t join.
Those right front sts should be at the back end of the needle, then the cast on sts, then the left front sts at the tip of the needle. This video is for a crocheted collar or hood but the stitches begin on the same side of the cardi as your held sts. She crochets all the way around whereas your directions are to cast on over the back of the sweater.
This really is quite pretty, I love the colors you are using. What is the pattern?
Duffle coat by debbie bliss, I personally am finding the instructions very vague. Thanks to knitting help I’m getting through it.
Is this the coat?
If you haven’t already signed up on ravelry.com, you’re going to want to do this. I use the site to look up patterns, to see what type of yarn different people have used, to read project notes, etc.
I’m glad you found us
I thought that maybe if I tried to draw this it would make more sense. It’s not Leonardo (and not Picasso either) but see if it helps. Here’s a linkto the earlier thread.
The bottom drawing with the cast on sitches going over the back neck is what you want. I wondered if like me you needed to see that. If you have the CO stitches there, they will span the back neck and you will then start knitting on the held stitches where the arrow is. At that point you should have one row of knitting with a gap at the back neck. I assume that you will be instructed to stitch the edges together later to close the gap and attach the hood to the back neck. I think you’ve got it.
These concepts can be so hard to get but once you do you’ll have a much easier time with future projects. Good for you for not giving up!

I think I finally got it, thanks everyone for all the help. Wish the pattern had the diagram you sent me. How helpful would that have been. I will post a final version of “the beast”! N3ll
Good for you for working your way through. All the better for having struggled. Looking forward to the photo.
