I’d like to make my toddler some mittens, and I’m having a hard time deciding which of the two yarns I have available in my craft room would work best : Wool-Ease or Kureyon?
Wool-Ease is machine washable. But I’m not sure how well it would stand up to hard use. :??
The Kureyon is machine washable, but it’s so cute and stripey, and it seems like it would hold up really well.
Please help me decide!!
Kureyon isn’t machine washable, though. That’s why it works so well for felting.
Considering how often mittens get lost, I’d probably go with the WoolEase even if the Kureyon was machine washable.
yeah i think you have a pretty big jump there between your choices. I am not a fan of kureyon though i am generally sucked in by the pretty colors. I don’t know that i would be able to successfully keep those mittens on a little one’s hands because they would be kinda itchy. UNLESS you were going to make felted mittens!! 
I like to think about how often they actually get washed, not how often you think they’ll get dirty lol. I made my son mittens with Wool-Ease and I hate them. I used the size needle suggested on the packaging and they are SO stretchy-too stretchy. Also, working with that stuff was like being in hell. It was the wrong kind of slippery and it separated a lot. I made my other son a pair out of recycled sweater yarn (100% wool) and already they have worn so much better and really held their shape. Maybe I am just a snob! But I love to see his little hands in the varigated colors, all toasty warm. The plain red wool-ease ones look like they barely get the job done and not in a very beautiful way.
I’d go with the wool ease. I love noro kureyon, but I think it would be too scratchy for mittens…jmho.
How about one them sensations fuzzy yarn that is washable you can get at Micheals or Joannes?
I used wool ease for my first pair of socks. I used a size 4 needle. They worked out well for me. Ive been wearing them around and have washed them several times. So far so good. They dont stretch out.
Are you making these with a string? I had a bright red pair when I was a tot. Never lost em!

hmm…check my blog…the catonsvilleknits one…I have hat and mittens out of the Noro, and I LOVE it…it doesn’t feel scratchy at all…well a tiny bit…but they are SO tosty warm, no acrylic for these hands!!! 
I vote for the Wool-Ease. I’ve made both of my kids some mittens with wool-ease, using 2 strands held together. I can’t remember what size needles I used. 6’s or 8’s probably and I really like them. I also made my mother some mittens using Kureyon and they came out really nice and she loves them, but they are pretty itchy and I don’t think either of my kids would wear them. Kureyon really does feel a lot softer after it’s felted, so if you made felted mittens, that might work. That’s my $.02. Good luck!
I’ve never made mittens, but I didn’t have problems with Wool-Ease for the hat I made. It washed up well, too.
Kureyon is too scratchy to be worn next to the skin. AND, I bet you could get a FEW pairs of toddler mittens out of a skein of Woolease! If you want something even softer, try Plymouth Encore…worsted or Chunky. Its another wool/acryllic blend…I think its better quality but about the same price.
I love Kureyon as much as the next gal, but for anything that is going to either a) get hard and repeated use, or b) be worn by someone under age 12, I tend to stick with an inexpensive blend. So mark me down as another vote for WoolEase toddler mittens!
Hmmmmmm… someone mentioned an ‘idiot string’ for socks??? Still trying to imagine that!!! ROTFL!!! samm who doesn’t usually have trouble with losing socks… do you!?
