Mittens in the round - how to cast on more stiches by thumb?

Hi there, wow this site has benn helpful to me. This is my first post/question. I am knitting mittens in the round. I cast on 32 stiches divided by 3 needles (12/12/8). I increased a bit on the 8 needle and created 12 additional stiches to be the thumb gore. They are now safe on a holder. Okay here’s where I am lost… The pattern says:

At the end of the last needle (this I think is the one before the thumb gore), cast on 2 stiches Join these 2 cast on stiches to the stiches on the other side of the thumb gore.

:?? I have no idea how to cast on 2 additional stiches… The string is hanging off this needle so I tried to create a slip knot, but there was a lot of yarn between my last ‘legit’ stich and the new casted one. I tried just holding the yarn down and acting as if I already had a slip knot and it creates a stich with 2 cross overs on top - but still a lot of yarn in between the last legit and the new stich(es??). :verysad: I’m at a loss.

Thanks for any help here.

You can do a backward loop, or any of the single strand cast-ons. Check on the tap above.

Thanks! I think I got it. Thank you again!!
