Mittens confusion with dpn

Hello… I’m hoping someone can help me. If attempted to knit some mittens for the first time using 4 dpn. I’m at a point in the pattern (decreasing for thumb) that calls for 13 sts to be put on st holder. However if I do that I’m only left with sts on 2 needles instead of 3. Am I doing something wrong or do I just continuing knitting with the 2? :??

The next step after sts are on holder is to K21, cast on 3 sts, K rem 18 sts.

Does anyone have any tips?

Welcome!

You can redistribute the stitches more evenly if you want–just slip them from one to the other. Put a marker at the beginning of the round just to help you keep track of where you are.

I just got lucky that you are online at the same time I posted. Thanks for the timely reply. I’ll try to redistibute the sts and see what happens. I’m sure I’ll be asking more questions as I get further along the pattern.
