Mitten - thumb is inside out! Help!

I’m knitting a mitten using this pattern…

I finished the mitten body. So, using two dpn’s, I transferred the stitches from the stitch holder by slipping them purl wise onto two dpn’s. I also picked up 4 stitches as instructed.

Now when I start knitting the thumb is inside out!!! The knit stitches are on the inside and the bumps are on the outside. What did I do wrong, and how do I fix it???

well i am not sure what you did wrong, if anything, but i would say if you are knitting and the stitches are showing up inside out, purl the stitches instead.

Thanks for the advice! I was at least able to finish the mitten that way.

I’m still puzzled by how I ended up with the knit stitches inside out though. :?? Did I twist the stitches when switching fromt he dpn’s to the stitch holder and back again, maybe? Would that happen if I twisted them?

Look at this thread. She had the exact same problem. I wonder if it was the same pattern?

Ok, I have thought about this some more and I think I know what the problem is.

When you are knitting the mitten, you place several stitches on a holder. The side of the stitches that points toward the top of the mitten is the knit side of the knitting.

However, when you go back and knit the thumb, the stitches on the stitch holder become the bottom part of the thumb (you pick up a couple of stitches for the very top of the thumb). So, you end up knitting around on the side of the stitches that points toward the thumb.

does that make any sense? So it sounds to me like this is a pattern issue, and if I use this pattern again (which I am right now, I’m making another mitten and hoping it will come out better LOL) I should just purl the thumb all the way.

Does that make sense to anyone? If so I will go to the thread that Ingrid linked to and explain to that poster what the problem is for future ref as well.
