Mitten question

I am trying to branch out and try new things. I am doing a pattern for a cabled mitten and when you begin the gusset it says 1st row. Pat 20 sts. Inc 1 st in each of next 2 sts. Knit to end of row. 38 sts. I don’t know what to do with Pattern 20? Help?

Whatever sts you’ve been doing as the pattern for the back of the hand is done over those 20 sts. It could be stockinette or ribbing or a cable pattern - I don’t know which one you’re doing so can’t explain more specifically.

It is a Bernat pattern for hat scarf and mittens. The pattern before the gusset is the cable pattern. I think that makes sense to me. Once the cable Pat is in position it tells me to continue cable pat work 6 rows even. Does that mean I should work the cable pattern 6 more times?

Yes - work even means to work in the pattern for however many rows or inches given, with no incs or decs.
