My cat Ella escaped yesterday morning and hasn’t come back. Been putting up fliers and searching the whole neighborhood, but we’ve had no sign of her. Her “brother” escaped, too, but the neighbor’s cat alerted us to his location with much growling and hissing. I barely slept last night because I’m so worried 
She’s been an indoor cat her whole life, I don’t know what came over her.

How how sad…our younger dog got away a few times (fence jumper) and one time she was gone almost 30min and I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown. Cannot imagine having one of my babies gone all night !!
I’ve never had cats, but I often been told that if an indoor cat escapes it will typically hide someplace close to home - that they really don’t roam too far. Check every nook and cranny, can you leash her brother or put him in a crate with some food and see if she’ll come to him?

Sorry to hear about your kitty getting out! Indoor kitties usually hunker down someplace where they feel safe when caught outdoors.
Sometimes placing some items that smell like you and your family near the house can help the kitty realize which house is yours (they won’t recognize it from the outside).
Have you tried walking around with a can of tuna or her favorite food? Especially when it is particularly quiet outside, you might hear her meowing from a hiding spot.

Oh I hope you find your kitty soon.I also found that when any of my guys went AWOL they were usually someplace close…I usually went up and down the street calling for them,they didn’t always come to me but it let them hear my voice cos most times the showed up soon after.
Of course all the neighbours thought"there goes that crazy cat lady again"
Our Sophie escaped about two months ago…we were having severe thunderstorms at the time and I just knew she was a goner or had become eaten by a varmint and that she was so frail that there was no way that she’d survive outdoors. Sophie has also been declawed so I worried that she couldn’t get away from dogs that might chase her.
After three days and nights of waking up in tears, searching everywhere, including the neighbors…Found her within 50 feet from the house, hiding in the wheel well of a boat trailer we had parked in the yard! :tap: Since we feed other outdoor cats, she had plenty of food and the pontoons on the trailer kept her covered enough from the weather. Funny how we forget that they are animals that have god-given abilities to survive. I hope you find your kitty soon! 
Oh no! I hope you find your baby soon! Is she fixed? A long time ago before I had my cat, Evil spayed she got outside…No one saw her run out of the house, she must have slipped by someone as the front door opened and it wasn’t until later that evening I realized she was gone (she used to hide out during the day and come out at night, once things settled down). I went out looking for her with cat food, calling her, everything I could think of for 3 days straight…I thought for sure she was gone…On the 4th day there she was sitting on the front porch waiting to be let back in the house! And, she had quite the surprise for us some months later, a litter of adorable little babies! LOL! After she recovered from the birth, I took her to get spayed and she hasn’t gone out since. I do hope your kitty comes home soon!
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. We’ve searched several times a day for her close to home. We keep checking around the yard, just in case. My mom set out our humane animal trap (it’s long and closes a flap at the front when they get to the back) with some food in it outside. Ella’s favorite pillow is outside in her crate as well, with some water. We put brother out there (he hates being crated), hoping that his whining would help her find her way back. We’re gonna keep doing that, keep searching. We put fliers around the entire neighborhood. Also put them on peoples’ doors. All-told, almost 100 fliers are up, so anyone who sees her should know she’s not a stray. I also put on the fliers for people to check their garages and back yards, since she might be hiding. A lot of people have had their garage doors open this weekend.
I just hope she’s not hurt. Luckily, she’s tough (she’s actually a masochist :P), but she’s also [I]extremely[/I] curious and often finds herself in precarious situations. Hopefull she’s just hanging out somewhere.
I hope she finds her way home soon. When my kitty got out, I ended up propping open the door and putting on my usual evening TV shows - it wasn’t too long before he slunk in, thrilled to be away from the Big Outside (which wasn’t nearly as exciting in real life as it was from inside, apparently) and with his mama. Special thanks to Tom Brokaw for his contribution to luring the kitty back in. 
We finally got desperate and hired a search and rescue dog to come help us search. The conclusion was that, likely within a few hours of her escaping, she was picked up (with her collar that has ID!), carried off for a distance, then driven off in a car. So, someone stole her. We’re now trying to find kitty AND thief. We’re trying to coax whoever took her to bring her to the vet via our posters. We’re in touch with vets and animal shelters every day, and if she gets brought in to any of them in the area, she’ll get scanned and they’ll see from her microchip that she’s our. They’ll hold her until we pick her up.
How can you just take somone’s pet when you KNOW it has an owner? Our phone number was on her collar, and her collar was obviously on her neck since the dogs didn’t find it in their search.
Sorry to hear that you still haven’t found Ella. It sounds like you’re doing everything humanly possible to find her! I’m glad you have her chipped- if her collar came off and someone has taken her in, they might check for it if they take her to a vet.

WE GOT ELLA BACK! At like 11:45pm on Saturday, my parents got a call from a neighbor saying that they saw her. She was literally one street away (our guess is that whoever took her let her go or she escaped from them). The neighbor and her husband stayed with Ella until we came, then stayed outside until we actually caught her. She got a scratch below her eye in the process of us catching her, and the adventure of the week took its toll on her as well. She dropped a pound and a half. She was a healthy weight to begin with at 8.5lbs, but now she exhausted her fat pouch and then some. But, in the last day and a half, she’s gained back about 1/5 of a pound and is eating and drinking normally, so it looks like she’s gonna be okay! The vet just told us to keep an eye on her for a while, just in case. But she’s back!

I think cat stealing is pretty unusual unless it’s a rare or expensive breed that someone thinks they can sell. I suspect she just wandered off and got lost. Cats are naturally drawn to the outdoors and like to explore all the new bugs and smells.

So glad to hear she is back! We had a bit of a scare with our kitty Cupid yesterday too. He is an outdoor cat and usually comes when called. My DS let him out yesterday morning before we left for work (and he to a friends house) I left the slider open a crack (praying that we did not get a chipmunk in the house, which happened a couple of weeks ago!) We got home VERY late (2am) because we went to the Red Sox game with our DD and some friends of hers last night and we don’t live very close to Boston anymore! No Cupid last night, we called and called. I was up early for a bit this morning and tried again - no kitty. But DH got up a little later and found him He is now FAST asleep on our bed!
So glad you got Ella back! My “grand cat” escaped a couple of weeks ago. He was gone for 2 days. I called and called, shook the food container, but he didn’t come. Then, one morning, I opened my front door to leave for work, and there he was, with a look that said “why’d you lock me out for 2 days?”
They are family members, aren’t they?
