I am wondering how I can knit without turning the work. would a right hand row and then a left handed continental row work or would I have to knit a right handed row and then knit backwards? and if I am going to knit left handed or mirror to not turn the work should I do a garter swatch like I did when I learned to knit right handed? :knitting:
Is this what you’re asking about? She shows Continental and English (or American as she calls it) styles.
KNITFreedom - Knit Backwards: Save Time By Knitting Backwards
I’ve used it on entrelac. I played around with it when I was knitting just to get the hang of it.
Left handed knitting is a whole different thing. It’s where you actually knit the stitches from the right needle to the left. Most left handers actually knit right handed so they don’t have to change the pattern since the vast majority of patterns are written for right handers.
Continental and English are the most common of several methods of knitting. In continental you carry the yarn in your left hand and English you carry it in the right hand.
What you’d need is to learn to knit backwards like the link GG posted.
Did you know that there are 4 basic types of knitting? They are: Right handed English(I do that), Right handed continental, Left handed english(backwards knitting), and Left handed continental
Add Portuguese (my style), Norweigian, and the eastern European varieties and we have a knitting smorgasbord to celebrate! :woot:
I tried but never quite got the hang of knitting backwards, forwards was challenge enough for me.
I admire those who can.
I’ve yet to manage a decent purl stitch English style. Portuguese knitting is on my list of Things I Will Do. Learning to spell Portuguese is also on that list.

Now you’ve got me wondering if I need to add learning to spell portuguese to my list too.:??
Spell check knows how to spell it.
Why can’t I find any videos on right handed continental knitting if it exists. I can find videos on: Right handed english, Left handed english(or backwards knitting), and Left handed continental but not Right handed continental. I know it exists so why can’t I find videos on it?
Try the video links at the top of the page. Unless you’re knitting left handed just don’t worry about left handed anything. It just confuses.
continental is not just left handed. There is a right handed version of it. I just can’t find anything to do with right handed continental.
I don’t understand what you mean by “right handed Continental.” I am right handed, I hold the needle making the stitches in my right hand, I knit Continental style. Do you mean holding the working needle in your left hand and the working yarn in your right hand? That would be something like in the video I posted the link for when she knits backwards English style. Are you wanting to start knitting left handed entirely or do you want to sometimes avoid turning your work?
99% of videos will be for right handed methods, both English and continental. I’m not sure why you can’t find anything. If you look up continental knitting the vast majority will be for right hand knitting.
As long as you’re moving stitches from the left needle to right you’re knitting right handed. There are videos for both types, English and continental in the video section at the top of the page. Many of the videos have both techniques.

Etc…
I want to sometimes do left handed english(backwards knitting and purling) I just wonder if I should do a garter stitch swatch like I did for the right handed english. and style of knitting doesn’t pertain to handedness. There is a right handed and a left handed version of each style despite the fact that english knitting is called right handed knitting sometimes and continental knitting is sometimes called left handed knitting.
Left hand knitting and backward knitting are two different things. Do you mean you don’t want to turn and purl? Normal backward knitting is not considered left handed.
I have watched a video on left handed english and it is knitting backwards. Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTwtObwnMh0
Sure. Go for it. Make a swatch. I think you’ll enjoy it immensely. ![]()
yeah but should it be garter or stockinette?
If you scroll down you can find some videos that might interest you.
Make a garter stitch swatch and stockinette swatch. That way you’ll really get the hang of it. Who wants to choose one and not the other, this way you can do the garter stitch first and then the stockinette. WIN WIN !!!
