For the past two years life has been on the edge…my house has been a revolving door with military leaving…students returning…friends in need needing temporary housing…even a death.
All during these times, my knitting room became a harbinger for everything else that needed to be stored. Currently I am “sharing” that room with items from my children’s father’s estate. So many other things have been the priority. Somehow I have managed to continue knitting…
Now I feel such a need to get that room back to some semblance of a true craft room and it is just overwhelming.
I am thinking maybe in order to tackle this, I should just put the timer on an hour each day and hope for progress!
It is truly a wonder I have been able to crank out anything during these past two years!
An hour would be a bit much for me - I don’t think my attention span could last that long. Any length of time is good, even if it is only twenty minutes. You will be amazed at what can be accomplished in this short amount of time.
The fact that you’ve been able to complete knitted projects during this time shows your passion and your discipline 
You will love it when you reclaim your room.
I stopped by at my knitting friend’s house today and just marveled at her room! She gave me some ideas! Maybe an hour is too much! I may try the 20 minute method tomorrow!!!

Right after my daughter moved out, I cleaned out her teenage stuff (posters, etc) from her old room with the intent of using it as a reading room, but I found I missed her more doing that so avoided it after awhile. Then it became the household repository. I just now reclaimed it a couple of months ago, step by step, after 8 years of my empty nest avoidance. Doing a little each day was key.

Sometimes I find if I say I’m going to clean for an hour (like when I’ve been re-organizing my basement since last Oct) before I know it 2-3 hours have past, but I’ve got a lot accomplished. Just start with what’s in front of you and take it one step at a time. Sometimes going to IKEA or someplace similar might give you ideas on organization too. I’m still working on my basement, but it’s almost there as my new library and craft corner. Good luck! I’m sure it will be fantastic when you’re done - and well worth the work!
Better Homes and Gardens has a website, I did a search for Craft Room; I haven’t checked them out yet, wanted to pass this on in case you may find something useful.
20 - 30 mins a day sounds like a really good plan. What are you going to do with the stuff as you take it out any tidy it up? Maybe put all the things for one person in boxes or plastic containers with their name on the side. Easy to identify what’s what later and you can stack them to save space, or throw a cover over the boxes and you can use it as a table. Take a before and after photo, it will be fun to compare!
I like the idea of 20-30 min at a time. It’s manageable and will eventually get the job done. I must say that I envy you the idea of a knitting/craft room. I try to keep everything that’s immediately needed in one bag. Good luck with the clean out and reclamation!
I am STILL going at this project! Today I went through my books and magazines…Decided it was time to RECYCLE the paper catalogs from various companies…
ALso put up a 6 foot craft table to start sorting through some of my yarns…to better organize.
I must have gone through a BOUCLE period!!! Goes something like…
Boucle…DELAY…No way…
Although I did find a pattern for SLIPPERS for it…
I do have an idea…use up my most expensive yarns first…I would hate to die and have my kids sell a $28 skein for a buck at a yard sale!!!
I can so very much relate to this topic, Usamacka.
My husband made me a space in our home office, where we each have a computer, each a nine-foot high bookshelf, and one filing cabinet.
He removed a closet, then we went to IKEA and bought me two drawer units (each with 5 drawers); 9 deep shelves, 6 shallow shelves, and some fabric boxes to store things inside.
I have been working at organizing my STUFF for over a month on all this…and seem to be making more and more messes. I suppose it’s getting sorted, slooooowly…but: I’m beginning to think that I don’t have a sortacious bone in my body. I am beginning to think that I like making messes and sitting in the middle of them, looking as if I’m sorting…

I have plastic see through boxes for some of my yarns…but seems like there is NO ORDER in any of those anymore either!!! I am happy to hear from other readers here on the forum …that we all struggle with this from time to time.
I have a large farmer’s table that used to be in my kitchen on one wall. Attached to that is my swift and ball winder…measuring pad…and a few knitting machines that I attempt wire jewelry on…I have one small bookshelf that has the books I have bought and magazines. I have to make a decision on the shelving…I need to make the trip down to IKEA (about 30 miles on a busy highway I have no desire to go on!!!) or was thinking maybe office max (closer) might have something I could use…
Just the sorting through is helping now…I also need to redo my needle inventory. Currently my needles are in containers that fit in an expandable AARP bag!!! I bought the bunnykins knitting series off of ebay and would like to display those somewhere in the room preferably on a small shelf that my father built …probably close to 60 years ago!
It will get done!!!

You’re doing great! I nearly swoon at the thought of you using a farmer’s table for the swift and winder.
You’re lucky. The closest IKEA to me 2 1/2 hr drive (one way) and in another country. 
Sound like you are making some great progress! I hope you post some pictures when it’s done. 
I applaud your attempts at organization. Its a huge task when the room in question resembles a mountain of stuff more so than what it was intended for.
I wish I could be more organized, but it never seems to work out. I usually take out more than I put back and the room looks like a tornado blew through at all times.
My grandmother was almost the same, but her collection of possessions were all treasures and held some sentimental or monetary value, or both. Her home was always neat and tidy though.
Maybe Ikea was a good idea. My closest Ikea is about 20-30 minutes away too, depending on traffic.
I found an old china hutch at a thrift shop today…I have some ideas…and will be full at it this coming week …hopefully with pictures!!!
Decided on this …rather than shelving…
