Mermaid again by Fiona goble

I am stuck on row 42

K1, m1, k4, inc, k4, m1, k1

I know how to increase but don’t know we’re to increase. Can anyone advise please. Thank you 🩷

It looks like you should have 11sts from the previous row.
That means there is one stitch between the k4 sts.
K1, m1, k4, k1, k4, m1, k1

Increase either before or after that k1 so that you end the row with 14sts. In the following row you’ll divide the 14sts in halves to work the tail. You’re almost finished!

So do I knit 4 then knit another and increase that and then knit 4 again?
Thank you

How are you working increases?
If you’re making increase in a stitch (kfb or a lifted increase) the use that single middle stitch to work the increase.
If you’re working a m1 then use the strand either before or after the middle stitch. For example:
K1, m1, k4, m1, k1 , k4, m1, k1

It states in back of book an inc by working into front and back of next stitch.
There isn’t a single knit stitch on its own.
It’s knit 4 then says inc then knit 4.
Thank you

The previous row has 11sts. Is that the number of sts that you have on the needle at the end of row 41?
If you add up the sts needed to work row 42 (that is without considering the m1’s for the moment) it adds up to 10sts.

K1, m1, k4, inc , k4, m1, k1
The k1+k4+k4+k1=10sts. So that means there is another stitch in the row unaccounted for. It’s a k1 placed this way:
K1, m1, k4, k1 , k4, m1, k1
Now the row accounts for the 11sts on the needle (again we’re not considering the m1’s or the inc because we haven’t worked the row yet)
The bolded k1 can be used for the kfb if that’s the increase you would like to work.
K1, m1, k4, kfb , k4, m1, k1 (14sts)

It may help to see this if you place markers after the first 5sts and before the last 5sts before beginning row 42.

Thank you for your help. X
