Measuring The Body Questions

Hi all, I am working on my first sweater, and I have questions on how to measure the body length as I am working. The pattern starts with 5" of k2p2 ribbing. When I measure, do I stretch the ribbing out to about the width it would be on my body, or do I leave it all shrunken in on itself?

There’s over an inch of difference in the sweater body if I stretch the ribbing out, and since I’m a petite and the sweater is slightly tight fitting, I need to watch my length.

Also, do I count the row on the needle in the measurement?

Does anybody have a link for good knitting tips that concern these questions? I did a google search before asking, and surprisingly, nothing came up.

Thanks!
Gina

hi Gina,

I measure ribbing at the base of a sweater as is.
Dee

Gina,

I don’t stretch the ribbing out on the needle, just let it lay natural on the needle. Also, place your tape measure or whatever right under the needle, not counting the stitches on the needle. I think this is the way it’s done.

Hope this helps…Mary

Thanks Dee and Mary! I’m more confident in going ahead with my sweater now! Thanks so much for replying! :cheering:
