Measuring for tube socks

My 5 y.o. dd has talked me into making her a pair of socks with some pretty self-patterning Opal yarn. I want to make tube socks so that she can wear them for more than a few months, but I don’t know how wide to make them. Where should I measure her foot? I’m thinking the widest point would be from the “corner” of the heel, around the top of her foot, am I right?

TIA!

Measure the circumference of her foot around the ball of her foot. Multiply this # by your gauge. I usually decrease then by about 5% for snugness, but if you want them to be worn for a while you may not want to do this.
I then round up or down to the closest # divisible by 4 because I do a 2x2 rib on the cuff. If you are doing a 1x1 rib, round up or down to the nearest # divisible by 2
Is this what you meant?!

Yes, thanks! I was wondering, if I was going by the measurement of the ball of her foot, if the sock would go over that diagonal from the corner of the heel to the bend on top of the foot. I’ll try it like you say!

Thanks!
