Maybe a bit of a no-brainer but

I was wondering if there are times when you need to cast on extra stitches in order to accomodate a chosen stitch pattern. For example, knitting mittens or hat etc. in a stitch pattern that requires a lot of twists such as cableing.

You can increase, not cast on, stitches for beginning cables after another stitch that doesn’t pull in as much a cables. Sometimes I begin my cables with a cross and work the increase into the back of the cross then the new stitches just grow out of the cross.
