Mattress stitch

I’m trying to finish a stocking hat. So my question is, when doing the mattress stitch, do you have the work right out or right side in?

Have the public side facing you. If you do a part that turns up think about how it will turn up and make sure all parts that will face the public are the side you work from.

public side. i’ve never heard that before. its kinda quaint sounding.
