Mattress st seam, edges

Hi - I’m trying to knit again after being away from it for years and years. I’d only done simple things. I want to make clothes for a couple of vintage dolls. I haven’t found many useful free patterns on the net, so have been just getting the general idea and trying to make my own designs. iow, I’m pretty much trying to run before I learn to crawl:p

I’d like to use mattress st for the sideseams of a dress, but the dress is stocking st, so the edges are going to curl if I don’t do a couple of garter sts at each side - but the garter st would kind of stand out and make the seam really obvious, wouldn’t it? So - should I do just stocking st right across - then when I seam it and block it would it lie flat enough?

tia - I’m SO glad I found this site!

Yes. Stocking st won’t curl as part of a seam. It’s more of a problem at the edges of something like a scarf. Mattress will work perfectly for your stocking st seams.

You don’t need to do anything different for seamed edges; sewing them together will stop the curling.

Thank you!
