Materials ask for one size needle, instuctions call for two

I’m starting a sweater vest from Family Circle. The materials listed include a size 6(4mm) 40"(100cm) round needle. The instruction start out “with smaller needles” How do I know what = smaller? Is this an error or is there a method to knowing this. Thanks

do you have a link to the pattern at all? i would guess there is a set of needles missing in the instructions if it is telling you to start with smaller needles. or maybe you can tell us which issue of the magazine it was in?

Hi Molly,

If you start out with ribbing for this vest and the pattern doesn’t tell you what size to use, I’d start out with a needle 2 sizes smaller than the main body of the item. Try size 4 and see if you like it.
