Matching yarn to pattern - (or vice versa?)

Hello there - it’s been awhile since I’ve been here, but I’m sure someone can answer my question!
I have a hat pattern that calls for 170 g bulky weight yarn knit with size 11 needles.
I have Snuggle yarn that says it’s 100 g (it’s alpaca, wool and acrylic) and I have size 10 needles.
Pattern calls for casting on 48 stitches and knitting in garter.
What do you think? Do I need bigger needles? Smaller ones? Do I cast on more stitches?
Thanks!

Jennifer

This is where gauge becomes important.

The pattern should say how many stitches per inch the gauge is. From there, you make a swatch with your yarn and needles and see if your gauge matches.

If you have too many stitches per inch, they’re too small and you need a bigger needle. Too few, they’re too big and you need a smaller needle.

When yarns are close in thickness, you can adjust the gauge with the needles.

If you only have the 10 needles, figure out your gauge and compare it to the pattern. Then you can see if you need to add stitches.

I was afraid you’d say that!
I’m off to :knitting: a swatch!

Thank you, Ingrid!

Or you can cast on with 11s in the pattern and work a few inches to see if it works out. By the time you make a good size swatch you’ll have made about 1/3 the hat anyway.

okay, guage should be 4.5 stitches per 2 inches. Mine is 6 sts per 2 inches.
pattern calls for 48 sts.
If I don’t have bigger needles (I used 11’s, I have to check if I have 12’s, I think I only have 13’s) - how many extra sts should I cast on? (How would I figure that out?)

48 stitches at 2.25 stitches per inch equals 21.33 inches.

63 stitches at 3 stitches per inch equals 21 inches.

There are no US size 12s, they go 11, 13, 15. So either try the 13s or use 63 sts as suggested above.

I tried the 13s - my gauge was the same…so - I’m frogging and starting again on 11’s with 63 sts.
I really want a hat!!
