Hi all, could do with tapping in to the expertise on this forum as I’ve ground to a hall.
I’m doing the back piece of Martin Storeys Allie vest / tank top and half way through it says to cast on 5 stitches at the start of next two rows, and then take the stiches in to the pattern…my confusion is that original cast on is 116, but despite saying cast on 5 it then says total should be 117?!? See below for extract, with relevant bits highlighted! What am I missing or not understanding??
Thank you all
Martin Storey Allie help needed
Hi EmilyT
Reading the pattern from cast on, after Row 18 it has you Moss 5 sts and then slip these sts onto a holder, rib 53 (for first size) M1, rib to the last 5 sts and place them on a holder which leaves you with 107 sts on the needle to work with. After working as the pattern says to your next highlighted part this is where you cast on 5 sts each end to make 117 sts .
Did you skip the first step at Row 18 perhaps?
Hope this helps
OMG, how daft of me!! I have got those stiches placed on stitch holders but didn’t factor that in as losing 10 st - doh!!
As an extra question, when it says ‘taking cast on stitches in to pattern’ - does that mean starting the pattern rows at the new start of the row with 5 new stiches or do I work the 5 and then start the pattern?
Thanks again
It’s very easily done lol
You’re working an 8 row pattern repeat, you incorporate the new sts into this pattern keeping the continuity with what you have already worked. Looking at your work and keeping the pattern correct, work out what the new sts each side should be. If there aren’t enough sts to make a full set of 3 just work what you have in the pattern stitch it should be. I can’t see if there are further increases ahead but if there are you just work them in to the pattern as you make them.
I hope this makes sense
Aha, thanks for talking through this, I’ve just returned to it and now I get it…basically ‘keep pattern correct’ is the key phrase here, and is essentially Martin Storey saying to me ‘look I’ve give you most of the information you need, if I spell it all out for you it’ll make the pattern three times longer, so you can work the rest out for yourself’
