hello I have a question. in a thumb gusset im trying to make it says k1,pm,k1,pm,knit for rest of row. correct that I place the marker on newly knit stitch?
You’d k1, then place a marker, then k1 again, and place a marker. The markers will be placed between the stitches, not “on” the stitches. Hope this helps you! 
Don’t put the marker on the stitch. Use a ring, a scrap of yarn tied in a loop, a pin, something that will fit onto the needle and you can slip from one needle to the other easily.
