Making a Hat Bigger

How do I know how many extra sts to add on to a hat that is too small?

Here’s the link to the hat…

It seems perfectly simple, but it’s too small for my hubby’s head.

Any ideas??

Do you know what size you want it to be in the end? I’d measure his head, then take off about an inch for ease.

The gauge on the pattern is about 3.75 stitches to the inch, so for every inch larger you want it to be, add 3 to 4 stitches to your cast on. The pattern has 70 stitches for a 20 inch hat, so if you want a 22 inch hat, I would add 6 to 8 stitches for 76 to 78 stitches. Of course that will depend too on the gauge that you got when you knit it up, so ultimately go by that.

Okay, I get what you’re saying and thank you very much for your help. One more question…

I’ve made the pismo hat before and it was too short, plus I hated how they made the decreases, too time consuming for me. Could I make the pismo hat and use the hat decreases in my first post.

Does that make sense?

Pismo hat instructions minus their decreases and use the Jimmy’s bulky beanie patterns decreases??
