The pattern should tell you what the gauge should be, something like 18 sts in 4". But you don’t want to measure the edge sts, they’re a different size than the center sts and curl under besides. So cast on at least 24 sts, knit a couple rows, then usually you knit in stockinette for about 3-4". Measure the number of sts over 4" so you can see if you’re getting the same as the pattern gauge. With some yarns you may need to wash and block it the same way you will the finished item. What are you making, and what yarn are you using?
