Make my yarn go further?

I am just a little short on the amount of yarn required to make an item I want. I really want to keep using this particular wool and cardigan pattern but would be happy to use a different stitch pattern. It currently uses a 3 x 4 basket weave stitch pattern and I wonder if anyone has any suggestions that might help make my wool go just that bit further to let me do the project?

If the stitches are not already tight or you’re not pushing the fit a step down in needle size should use less per stitch.
That does make a denser fabric and smaller piece.

What are you making and where are you in the pattern? What might work on a blanket might not work on a sweater.
