Make a stitch

just wondering, is there a standardized way for creating a new stitch- I know there are various methods, and the pattern does not indicate which way the "make a stitch should be created. Here is the pattern:

as for the increases, if a pattern doesn’t state a specific kind, then it’s up to you to use which kind you like. http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/increases has a pictorial listing (with video links, if you need them). the easiest is just ‘make one’ (also called ‘make one away’ or ‘make one towards’ depending on direction).
