Madeira cascade

Hello everyone,

i found this lovely scarf pattern and started knitting it. The first time i did the pattern stitch, the piece came out beautifully, but when i start the second repeat the stitches not enough. i’ll paste the pattern, hopefully that will make more sense then my rambling.

when i start the 3rd row for the 2nd time, the k8 stitches, sl1,k2tog,psso stitches are out of alinement. could anyone help me?

Row 19: K2, * [k1, yo, (sl1, k2tog, psso), yo] 5 times; repeat from *, end k3.

Row 20: Purl[/I]

Thank you

The pattern begins with the cast on of 45 and ends with a row of 45sts. Have you counted the number of sts that you have on the needle? The second pattern repeat may not align with the last row of pattern but it should look just like row 3 at the beginning of the pattern repeat.

Yes, i made sure that i followed the pattern exactly. but at the end of the 20th row i either had 43 sts, the second time i had 39. Really, it’s confusing me

It’s easy in a lace pattern like this to forget a yarn over or to have one or two slip off the needles. I would look back at the scarf and see if I could spot where there might be a missing yo. The rows I checked all have 45sts and that’s what you need to start the pattern repeat. It won’t help with your current problem but it will help in the future if you put in a lifeline (see Free Videos, Tips). Markers may not be so helpful in this pattern because of the way the pattern shifts, but you could try stitch markers as well, just to make counting easier.

Thanks for your help, at least now i know that the pattern is right. I’ll try again. thanks for the suggestions. i’ll get back to you after i’ve tried again.

I’m currently working on a lace pattern that’s about 48 stitches wide. There are four K sts at the beginning and end of every row, and I’ve put stitch markers to set these off. I’ve also put a marker every 10 sts along the design, because I was somehow losing track, what with the YOs, SKPs, PSSOs, K2TOGs, and all the rest of it.

Ever since I put in the markers, life has been much easier. I know that, at the end of each row, I have 48 sts. If I don’t, I can just go back along that very row and find out which section of the row is incorrect, because each section should have 10 sts.

Let me see if I can make a symbolic representation of the rows and markers:

----o----------o----------o----------o----------o----

where - = stitch and o = marker.

Some knitters, particularly experienced ones, may resist using so many markers, but as a new knitter, I find their use invaluable.

DCM (hoping this post will help make the Christmas weekend less stressful for at least one other knitter)

I tend not to use markers as they get in my way, but it’s usually very helpful to other knitters, especially when they’re just getting started with lace.

When I am knitting a complicated pattern that has repeats of it on the same row I use stitch markers to separate each repeat in case I make a mistake I find it quickly and tink back to correct it.
