M1L too loose?

Hello all, calling on your collective wisdom once again.

I’m making telly bean knits stocking stuffer cowl. It’s the first time I’ve tried anything like this and it’s already causing me issues. :joy: There’s a jog on the stripe and the Lacey holes on the left of the centre line are much bigger than the right. Am I right in thinking that my M1Ls are causing the issue? Either they’re too loose or my M1Rs are too tight?

Oh and would you carry on or start over? Maybe my garter tab cast on was off, that’s a distinct possibility.

Lovely cowl. Other than those pesky holes your knitting looks great. It looks to me like you’re knitting your m1l untwisted.

M1L Knit Increase Tutorial

If you want to practice correcting mistakes you could drop down the stitches and work on that. It might be easier and neater to go back to before the first increase and redo it. Dropping down that many stitches to fix things like this can get frustrating and lead to frogging anyhow. Your choice.

Ah ha! That’s exactly it! Thank you so so much!

I’ll do a few practise ones on this piece and then I think I’ll start over. You’ve made my day, thanks again.

Your cowl will be too cool. Glad I could help.

Glad to hear the hole question is solved.

There’s no need for a jog in the stripe but I don’t often do colour work in the round so can’t off the top of my head remember the various options for eliminating or disguising it. I’m sure someone else will be able to point you in the right direction to resolve it though.

I can’t tell how far along you are, but if you haven’t reached it yet, or you do decide to frog and restart, you might want to consider that colourwork on the centre line which looks asymmetrical in the pattern photo. It’s the red bits just by the centre line, it looks like several appear on the left of the line but not on the right of the line. Depends what bothers you and what doesn’t, it would bother me and I’d want to ignore those few red bits from the chart and even out the pattern so that I only worked the colours when they are “full” on both sides. There’s also a small smudge of green in the band just above, looks like a jog there with the left of centre having a little more green than the right of centre.

I’ve seen a couple of really interesting videos from master knitters where they have almost completely recharted patterns to fix these sort of details (especially it seems from older patterns) to ensure a symmetrical finish.
Having said that, there are things I’d be happy with which would bother other people, it’s a personal choice over whether to give it energy or not.
Either way, it’s a fun knit with the Xmas motifs. Looking forward to seeing your progress.

This is one way to minimize the jog.

Jogless Stripes in the Round - How to invisibly change colors in the round knitting

Oh wow, thanks that’s a really good spot and I wouldn’t have noticed until I’d made if. I’ll have a think about if to edit it. This is my first colour work project in the round so I might just have to embrace its imperfections this time :joy:. Really appreciate it!

If you want a deeper dive into jogless joins and color changes they’re out there. Some are pretty complicated. IMO try the simple fix first.
