M1 Increase

I have a pattern that says to M1 by lifting horizontal thread lying between needles and placing it onto left needle. Work this new stitch through the back loop.

I have two problems. This is at the very beg of my project (2nd row) and I can’t figure out which piece is the one that lies between. My second is I cant figure out what it means to work the stitch through the back loop.

Take a look at ‘M1L’ on this page. When you work the increase, make sure that you are knitting the first stitch of the row and then doing the M1. Otherwise, right at the edge, there is no horizontal strand to pick up.
