I was told that a way to help prevent curling is to slip the first stitch of every row. It’s working, but the stitch is really loose, and I don’t know how to make it tighter. Can anyone help me? Thanks! (I’m really new to knitting!):knitting:
I’m not sure slipping at an edge will prevent curling. It’s usually used on scarf edges, etc. to have a more uniform edge. Personally I agree with you that it can be sloppy and not consistent. I forgot often enough that I was suppose to slip that I ended up going around the edge of the scarf or baby blanket with a single crochet which I think looks even better. Maybe there’s someone out there who has a trick for edge slips that look consistent.
Are you slipping as to knit or as to purl? I’ve found that slipping as to knit makes a much better edge. Though I doubt very much that either will prevent curling.
Slipping the first stitch is supposed to make a `neater/better’ edge, not for preventing curling. It doesn’t work for me, they’re usually looser and messier than just knitting the stitch and pulling the yarn snug. Though slipping the last stitch and knitting the first one seems to do a little better.

I agree with the others that I don’t think slipping the first stitch will keep your edge from curling.
There are a lot of combinations of stitch treatments to acheive that slipped stitch thing. One I like is to always knit the last stitch in a row no matter what stitch you are using. And then with the yarn in front, slip the first stitch as if to purl, no matter what you are doing on this row. I pull on the working yarn as I am slipping that stitch, and again as I begin to work the first actually worked stitch in the row. I get a pretty good result with this.
Agree that a slipped edge won’t do much for eliminating curl but here’s thread with pic of edge st slipped purlwise (yarn in front, slip). If you make a concerted effort to slip 1st st of every row (and last st of prev row was worked in patt) they should be uniform in size.
