Loose stitches in k3p3 ribbing

Hi everyone! New member here, although I’ve been knitting for a couple of years now.

I haven’t done very many projects in ribbed stitch, but I’m working on a scarf and hat set that’s in k3p3 ribbing (they’re a gift for my brother-in-law). I keep getting those loose stitches on the first purl stitch after a knit (both when I was knitting the hat in the round and now when I’m knitting the scarf flat), and I don’t know how to fix it. I’ve tried pulling both the stitch before and the stitch after really tightly, but it’s not working. I’ve seen tips for correcting this for Western/English method (wrapping the yarn differently), but I use Continental.

Is there anything to be done? The scarf and hat don’t look terrible, but they don’t look great either, and as they’re a gift, I want them to be perfect.

I am having the same problem with an afghan I just started. I just found this and am going to give it a try. See if it helps you, too.

Improved ribbing

Yeah, I saw that. . .unfortunately, that’s for the Western method, and I knit in Continental. :frowning:

You can still do it, it will just require that you adjust for those stitches.

But. . . how do I wrap the yarn clockwise when I usually never wrap the yarn at all? I’ve never knitted in anything but Continental, and the whole idea of wrapping yarn (except for a yarn-over) is completely foreign to me.

You ARE wrapping the yarn when you knit continental…you just do it differently. I agree it might be harder doing it in continental, but I’m sure it can be done. Just grab the yarn different? I knit english except when I’m doing fair isle (I use both hands) so I’m not sure how you’d do it… :??

Amy has a video on this here. Scroll down to “Combined Purling.”

Wow! I just frogged the afghan and started over again using nonaKnits techniqueand it made a HUGE difference! I wish I’d taken a before photo, but I didn’t.

To add to what she says if it makes it easier to understand… I wrapped the first purl stitch after a knit clockwise then purled normally. When I turned the work around at the end of the row I knit through the back loop of the last knit stitch and then did the clockwise wrap on the next stitch which would be a purl. This continues till you are done ribbing.

Amazing… :zombie:
