Looking for

an easy sock pattern that isn’t the kind done in Silver’s Sock class. I’ve been making socks for a few years now and feeling like I want to do something that does the heel differently as I find the basic sock heel stands out like a sore thumb.
I’d like to do a sock heel that just naturally appears. I’ve seen some online before but have been unable to find a pattern for them, not knowing what they are called.
I prefer to do plain knitting… no fancy stuff… okay?
Can you please help me…
Thank you,
TEMA

Hi TEMA, welcome back!
I’m not exactly sure about the heel you want but here is a description of several kinds that might help narrow it down. And here is a simple heel on a sock pattern, although it may not be what you had in mind. Often the heel is re-inforced with slip sts or fancy sts to keep it from wearing out too quickly.

This looks like your basic short row heel sock.

TEMA,

I’m no real help for top down socks, but…If you work your socks toe up on magic loop in sock yarn… you can cast on 10-12 sts using a figure 8 cast on. work an increase at each end on both front and back of the sock until the knitted piece fits over your toes. (My socks come out to about 56-58 sts at this point, YMMV) Work even in the round until it fits to where your foot meets your leg at the instep with your foot flexed, then work a short row heel on the back.I use this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zu5YAKsAEpY) Work in the round again until your sock is as tall as you want it to be, and finish off with about 1 1/2 inch of ribbing(or however much you like). Voila, one super simple stockinette sock. Using self striping sock yarn helps me match sock size while making these.

Hope this helps, and have fun!
