Looking for easy first sweater

I would like to attempt my first sweater and I have been looking for the right pattern I would like to make one for one of my boys ages 2 and 7 any suggestions would be greatly appreciated (I would like something pretty simple).Thanks in advance. :smiley:

Are you comfortable sewing seams, or would you prefer a pattern that is seamless?

One of the first things I ever knitted was the wonderful wallaby, a pullover hoody that has no seams! You knit the body to a certain point, do the sleeves then join them and continue on. The worse part was figuring out the kitchener stitch that you do on the hood (well, I guess that might count as a seam), but it wasn’t too bad. You can search on here under my name or wonderful wallaby to see the pictures I posted. Also, to buy the pattern, check your yarn shop, they probably have it there. It covers sizes infant all the way to super super large.

I just made a wonderful wallaby sweater and have to say, it was so easy. There was no seaming except for 6 stitchs on each arm. The only other things other than this sweater I have made are scarves, so if I can do it so can you. :wink: :thumbsup:

Just wanted to say that when I made the wonderful wallaby I didn’t add the pouch or the hood because I was afraid that would be to hard. After seeing how easy the first one was though I will be making another with the pouch and hood. :smiley:

I’m working on one from Last Minute Knitted Gifts that I LOVE so far. I just started trying my hand at sweaters though, so what I mean by easy is - I’ve gotten through it so far without having any issues. :slight_smile:

It’s called the Child’s Placket Pull Over. Ordinarily you’d need to buy the book, but apparently the pattern was changed, so they posted it on the purlsoho website (the owners wrote the book).

Thanks kellyK I love the one you suggested it is just what I had in mind.knitting4 that sweater is really pretty but it looks hard to me I am not that confident yet :crying:

Hmm…looks like I’m going to have to special order it from Halcyon. It’s not in their regular list of patterns by that designer. Poo.

The wonderful wallaby was not at all hard. I’m serious when I tell you it was the third thing I ever knitter…#1 hat, #2 scarf, then that. And even doing the pocket was not hard. I thought the worse part was sewing those few stitches in the armpit, but that was just because I was not happy with how they looked.

Believe me, if I can do that, so can you!

Also, Google Yankee Knitter Designs to see if their patterns are to your liking. My first sweater was one of theirs, and it was fun and easy to follow.

knitting4bb, I knit that same sweater-it was my first sweater also. I have the book, and there was a mistake in the pattern in the book, so they reprinted it in it’s entirety (very cool !).

I love your version-mine was lavendar and the yarn was cheapo so it hasn’t held up well-lesson learned, I hope! What kind of yarn did you use? I like that color. I may knit it again, in something better, because it is so cute! And very easy, for a first sweater!

If you were asking me, I used Cascade 220…I think the whole thing was less than $20, and I had plenty of yarn leftover!

I have that book (i’m working on the hourglass sweater right now - in a very similar color couldn’t afford the Noro Cash Iroha), and I love the kids sweater, it’s adorable! My list of baby clothes to knit is getting longer…but no babies in sight…yet! :smiley:

just thought I would show you a picture of the wonderful wallaby I made. It was made using Bernat Denimstyle. The sweater was actually made for my 6 month old, but my 3 year old thought the sweater would fit him better. I am in the works to make him one that actually fits.
