Looking for an easy, first-timer tank/summer sweater pattern

I’ve not been knitting that long, but I really want to try making a tank top or summer sweater. I’m rather intimidated by the idea so can anyone suggest an easy to make pattern that won’t scare me off?

Thank you!

I’m making the baby version of this and it’s very easy.

Lots of free patterns here:
Knitting Pattern Central

If you’re looking for something knit in the round that’s pretty easy you might try one from here. I made 9724. They aren’t free, but they’re really only about $5. I want to try the shell.
Knitting Pure and Simple

I’m sure others will have suggestions, too.

Have you checked out these yet?

I am currently working on this top:

It’s fairly simple but definitely not plain.

Let us know what you decide, and don’t forget to post pics!

If you’re not averse to paying $4.95 for a pattern (hardly more than a latte!), the ChicKami is really cute and not hard at all! The pattern comes with a version without shaping if you want something quick and easy, and a version with some light waist shaping if you want to sex it up a little.

Warm weather knits are fun! Good luck!

How about this one?

Wow! Those are all so great and I don’t know which one to choose. Once I figure out which one to start with, I promise to let y’all know. Thank you so much.

I’m about to knit Soleil from Knitty for my sister. Thought I’d throw another pattern in so u would have yet another choice

I don’t know about the rest of you, but when I was a beginner I couldn’t have made ANY of those patterns!

I searched and searched, but couldn’t find a single tank pattern easy enough for a beginner. They all have shaping, which would have scared me off when I was first knitting!

Surely there is a simple pattern out there somewhere with a straight body and thin cords for straps?

This free pattern from Berroco is a lot easier than it’s name sounds! Many of my customers have knit it with much success.

The first time I ever knitted a garment, the shaping scared me senseless!!! If you pick a pattern with minimal shaping, it’s a lot easier than it looks. My suggestions would be to work in the round to prevent seaming, and look for a pattern that only has shaping at the “side seams” {you can use a stitch marker to indicate where they would be}. Dividing for armholes and the neck can be confusing at first, but plenty of people here are always willing to help you through the painful experience of your first time! If your armhole and neck shaping look a little wonky at the very edge, you can easily clean it up a little with a simple single crochet edge or something similar. I say find a top that looks the way you want it and just go for it!

If you want a beginner tank with no shaping that walks you though the armholes and neck step by step, this one is great: http://www.interweave.com/knit/TSC/yarn_girl_tanks.asp

How about a tube top?

I’m a beginner myself and I just thought a tubetop seems less intimidating cuz you don’t have to shape for arm holes and neck line and such
You could then easily add straps to it

But that if you haven’t ready yet to take a plunge into the arm hole shaping world like me

I would like to see which pattern you’ll try cuz maybe I’d be brave enough to give it a try myself

:rofling: :rofling: ME? In a tube top? I don’t think there’s enough yarn in the world to squeeze around this chubby frame.

I’ve still been a bit too intimidated by this so I have yet to buy yarn for anything. Maybe I’ll get up the nerve next payday.

I’m gonna knitt this for DDinlaw looks easy to me

I just found an easy beginner tank top. Finally.
