Long tailed cast-on

Me again. In all the time I’ve been knitting I’ve never done the long-tailed-cast-on. I would like to try it with my next project. I have watched the video, but can’t seem to get it right.

I start with the tail closest to me, but when I’m casting on the tail doesn’t shorten, I seem to be using the yarn from the ball instead. What am I doing wrong?:??

Many thanks

The part that is the short end should be the one you use on your thumb. There is another way to do a long tail cast on where you use both hands. I do it this way and find it easier. I’ll try to find a video for it. I know there is one.

Found it.LINK

It’s the link to the ‘Thumb variation’ that’s right under the regular LT description. I use it too, and find it a lot easier. But Merigold is right, when you start, make sure the shorter end is the one around your thumb.
