My little sister Annie just broke her foot and i feel soo bad for her! Just worried about how an eight year old will do on crutches. Anyone know how to make things easier for her?
I’m not sure there’s anything that can help her get around on crutches, but you are a nice sister to be concerned and want to help her.
I think spending time with her reading, coloring, and maybe teaching her to knit is the best thing for her.
She has been wanting to knit, but I don’t really know how to teach her. Anyways, here is a picture of her with her guinea pig before she broke her foot.
Poor little thing!
I broke my ankle when I was 6 and it healed up pretty quickly. Kids heal easier than adults, so that’s good news. One thing I would have liked when I broke my ankle was some company. I wasn’t able to run around with my friends, so i got bored. Just keep her busy and not thinking about her injury.
sending her fast healing thoughts.
I work in a children’s hosp and we teach kids to use crutches all the time - they will not slow her down one bit. If they casted her get her some markers to decorate her cast. Collect some towels, garbage bags and rubber bands to cover her cast and keep it dry so she can take a bath. If she is just in a fracture shoe and using crutches for a couple of weeks get some ribbon and stickers and help her decorate her crutches.
She’s really cute!
Like everyone said, she should heal fairly quickly, but boredom can make some people really cranky. You could help her by playing games with her, or bringing her books if she likes to read.
i broke my foot many times and started at about the same age as your sister.
she will very quickly learn to zip about on her crutches and get sympathy and getting the cast signed.
your a great sister thining that there could be ways of helping her. all i can think of it helping her with day to day things like carrying books etc i guess. thats the kind of thing that i needed help with.
After having many second graders over the years on crutches it is amazing how much better they get around on crutches than grown ups and how much faster they heal. Everyone is right about the boredom though. As far as teaching her to knit try using the videos on this site. Another teacher and I are going to start an after school knitting club and this is one of the ways we are going to help the students learn.
thanks everyone! i just started teaching her how to knit and it is going, as well as can be expected. the hardest part is that i am left handed and she is right
show her this website
You could also go with her to the library to do the summer reading lists… and check into your parents banks, I know ours gives the kids $3 per book into their account and all they have to do is read the book and then write a book report or do some sort of drawing about the book… given they have to read 25 books every year for school anyway, that’s 75 bucks they’re getting paid just to do as they’re supposed to!
she’s doing great! because it is a broken foot, she can’t put any pressure on it at all or else she might need surgery, so, she hops when she has to! she loves knitting too now!
she just had a doctor’s appointment and they said that she is doing well so far and should be allowed to put weight on it in about 3 weeks!! (but in a boot cast )
That’s great! And it’s wonderful that you care so much about you lil’ sis
