I am completely new to knitting. All I know is how to cast on and knit & purl stitches. I am running into glitch after glitch, though.
One recent glitch I ran into is that the yarn I bought had a cut in it, and both ends were just tied back together with a knot. The knot just slipped apart when I tried to just keep going as is. The ball of yarn just came this way, and I ran into it only after getting several rows into a hat.
Does anyone know how to tie back in when the yarn is basically snapped like that? Keep in mind, I do not understand any of the books. Even the pictures in the books are still photos of handwork seems impossible to interpret & reenact.
Thanks so much to anyone that can describe what to do in a way more understandable than these knitting books.
There should be some videos on the Tips page for joining yarn. Many people cut out the knots just for that reason. I would just tie the ends together again and tuck it back in on the WS.
Knots in yarn aren’t uncommon, but they are annoying.
Since you’re learning I would just tie the ends together again for now. For a project it would be just like starting a new skein of yarn. In that case you just start knitting with the new skein. The loose ends will be woven in at the end. If they bother you they can be tied loosely together and taken apart later.
Yeah, I usually just leave a tail of 4-6 inches of the one that you started with and then just start knitting with the new piece leaving a tail of it hanging there as well. Then when I’m done I do a tie that is not really a knot, but like the first thing you do when you tie a shoe ( cross the two ends over each other and take one of the ends though the center to form a loose overhand thingie). Then take the two ends off in different directions as you work the tails in. I like to work ends in well for about 2 inches with a sharpish needle that can divide the plies of the yarn, working them only through part of the yarn so it never affects the outside.
