This is the strangest thing. This pattern has a “pattern I” and “pattern II”. It seems easy enough to follow – first knit Pattern I, then knit Pattern II. But then it has “instructions” below that with the # of cast ons & the instructions are completely diff. from the above pattern I & II. Any help would be appreciated.
(It was just pointed out that I can’t print the pattern instructions here b/c it’s a paid pattern. So, now this post doesn’t make much sense, but I’ll leave it up for a while in case someone here has knitted the pattern.)
Pattern I:
7mm needles (10.5 US): garter st = RS and WS k.
Pattern II:
7mm needles (10.5 US): fantasy pattern
Next are the INSTRUCTIONS which don’t match the detailed instructions for each row printed under Pattern II.
Many patterns are set up like this, first the pattern sts and then the cast on and placement of the patterns. The directions after the cast on give you the way to work the sts, then a number of sts in pattern I, intervening sts, then a number of sts in pattern II.
Please edit your post to remove all but maybe Row 1. This is a paid pattern and it violates copyrights to reprint it here. You can use the pencil icon in the lower right of your post to delete most of the pattern.
Now, I’m more confused than ever, but thank you for pointing out that this is a paid pattern. I will delete it.
It’s a lovely shawl. Thanks for editing.
What is causing the confusion?
The confusion is that the first set of instructions, listing all the stitches in every row, don’t match the 2nd set of instructions. The first set is clear & concise, the 2nd is a jumble that makes no sense to me. It has been translated to Eng. & that’s prob. part of the problem & that it’s written different than what I’m used to. It is a beautiful shawl & the yarn is gorgeous. I’m soldiering on…
You can practice on the instructions for pattern I and II but they are not the shawl instructions. They are just part of the pattern, i.e. the pattern sts.
Start with row 1 and work the sts that are given. When you get to the part that says “pattern I” insert pattern I for the given number of sts. Then continue with the directions for the row until you get to an instruction that says to insert “pattern II” and so on.
What I see as missing is an initial asterisk in the pattern I and II descriptions but maybe they just didn’t copy over to your initial post?
Thank you for your help. I’m completely at a loss & frustrated. I cut & pasted the pattern exactly as written. The second part (instructions) makes absolutely no sense to me. I’m knitting it the way the rows are written in the first part & I’ll see what I come up with. So far, with the yo’s creating little holes, it’s very pretty. I’ve only been knitting for a year & it looks like this pattern is more in your league than mine.
Thank you again,
@Sonerila
The problem is the designer or translator used the word “pattern” with three different meanings. And this may be causing the confusion.
Since you can copy and paste it may help to open a blank document (for your own use and reference only) and paste in a copy of the whole pattern for you to edit.
I suggest replacing all occurrences on the phrase “pattern I” with “section 1”
Then find and replace all occurrences of “pattern II” with “section 2”.
You will then find under instructions that the whole pattern is made from both the sections.
cast on; some starting stitches, one or more repeats of a section (either section 1 or section 2), some transition stitches, one or more repeats of the other section (2 or 1), transition stitches, another number of repeats of the first section, and some ending edge stitches.
Turn and on to the next row.
My key point. There is only one pattern to make this shawl, and the pattern consists of sections that were confusingly ‘called’ pattern I and pattern II.
Often translations from one language to another miss subtle meanings of usage in the original language that causes the translation to be confusing.
I hope I have helped you see the patterns are all part of the whole shawl.

Thank you, John, for taking the time to help me out. Changing “pattern” to “section” is helpful & I did that in my word processor, but I’m still totally lost. I can’t re-post the pattern since it was pointed out that I would be violating a copyright. So…
“Pattern I” is only a few rows of garter stitch until it reaches 3/4”. So to continually refer to “pattern I” means what? Do a few garter stitches?
When it refers to “Pattern II”, there are 21 different rows of yo’s, K2tog, knits, purls, etc… The “instruction” section does not state which row it’s referring to. So when it states, “28 stitches, pattern II”, what the heck does that mean? What row? What stitches?
To make it even more confusing, the “instructions” list ROW 1 & ROW 3. I have no idea how this second set of rows coordinate with patterns I & II & those 21 rows. So, I’ve given up & am following Pattern I & II & ignoring the “instructions”. It’s creating a scarf instead of a shawl. I wish I could get this down bc I love the shawl, but I just don’t think I can figure it out. Thank you, again for your help.
