I am teaching myself via the web how to knit. I am curious about one of the first patterns I will try to make once I figure out a few stitches. It says to cast on 22 stitches then it says the first row will be 16 stitches… What happens to the other cast on stitches or am I reading this wrong.> Please help!!!
What kind of pattern is it? Can you link to it please?
There may be decs in it, and you use up all 22 sts, but are left with 16. Or there may be 6 YOs as well and you actually will have 22 left. A link to the pattern, or if you can post that row will help us explain it better.
Thanks I actually got the pattern from a book I cant believe Im felting… Its for a coin purse and it says…Guage: In stockinette Stitch, 16sts and 22 rows = 4" before felting. Cast on 22 stiches.
Row 1 (Right Side): Knit across
If you just knit across 22 sts and are only ending up with 16, you’re dropping some of the cast on sts as you knit across somehow. Look at the knit st video and practice the stitch.
Ha! I found your missunderstanding:
In stockinette Stitch, 16sts and 22 rows = 4" before felting. Cast on 22 stiches.
there are two different instructions / informations here…
In stockinette Stitch, 16sts and 22 rows = 4" before felting.
This is just your gauge: if you WOULD knit 16 stitches over 22 rows you would have a swatch of 4 inches by 4 inches.
You are supposed to try this out before you start you project. (so that your project becomes the same size as the pattern, adjustments can be made to the knitting or the pattern, if you need to)
then your pattern wants you to cast on 22 stitches for your project (not the swatch). your project (before felting) will be wider than 4 inches…
the information for the 4 by 4 inches is totally irrelevant for the acutal knitting.
For the knitting you cast on 22 stitches then you knit the first row. (I don’t know what your pattern wants for row 2)
AHHHHHHHH thanks that makes more sense!!! Im so glad I asked!
