Length for dpns?

I am going to do a sock for the knitting olympics on dpns. I have not ever used dpns before. I have 2,3,4 and 5 double points that are 7 inches long. I assume that they will be long enough for socks.

My question is, for other projects that are bigger, like bags, hats, etc, how long do you normally need your dpns to be? I plan on buying some more but I don’t know what length to buy.

Thanks!

When most people make larger circular projects, they switch to circular needles as soon as there are enough stitches to fit around.

Do dpns even come in longer lengths commonly?

I meant when you switch from circs to dpns. Like when decreasing on a hat for instance.

And yeah, I saw on elann.com that the brittanys came in different lengths and I got all confused. So I asked here.

I was actually just looking up longer dpn’s this morning because I wanted to use them on a neckwarmer I am making but the needles I have were short enough that the stitches kept trying to slide off while I was knitting. So I found this site, http://www.knitters-underground.com/dpneedles.html

I am a little nervous to order from there because I have never heard of it, but maybe someone else has?

The link above for knitty was how I even found out that dpn’s came in different lengths. There were other articles about them too, I just searched on blingo for double pointed needles and a bunch of links came up.

Hey! Another Blingo user. Rock on!

Actually this was a question I had myself the past week when I was contemplating getting some different sizes of DPN(need a size 10…I like 10s.).

Of course, when you have a gift certificate from somewhere, it all will depend on what they have in stock, I guess…

I’m thinking of doing the opposite. I already have a whole set of 7" DPNs but for small things like socks and mittens they get in the way. I’m planning to buy a bunch of 5" Brittany’s. Just another knitting item to spend money on. For bigger stuff like hats, I just start on circulars and then switch to my 7" DPNs and that works fine.

I just got some 5" Brittanys to go with all the sock yarn I bought and was surprised at how short they seemed after the 7". Then again, I’m terrible at guessing lengths and that kind of stuff. But they work really well and I’m not poking myself like I was with the 7" :roflhard:
