Left handed, yarn unraveling

Hi all,

I am a new knitter and left handed. I am finding that as I am knitting, my yarn is unravelling. It’s like untwisting and becomes hard and messy to work with. Am I doing something wrong? Any other left handers having this problem?

I am able to knit both left and right handed and my wife recently converted from left handed to right handed knitting. Because of this I think that it is possible to learn to knit right handed. When someone asks me I always suggest to knit right handed regardless if you are left or right handed. Then it is also so much easier to find videos demonstrating various techniques. Knitting is after all a cooperation between both the right and the left hand.

There are complex videos to explain how twisting and untwisting yarn occurs. It’s not just you. I find the easiest thing to do is to let my project dangle from the yarn ball (or vice versa) so that the yarn can relax or re-twist.

The worst I’ve ever knitted with is Brown Sheep yarn. It’s like 90% wool and 10% mohair I think. Beautiful wool yarn, but it’s always twisting. I gave to dangle it frequently to untwist it. It may help to knit from the center of the ball rather than the outside. Try putting the skein on the floor for good tension. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on a yarn bowl, put it in a plain old cereal bowl that you grab from the kitchen cabinet.
