Does anyone know how to knit lateral braids? i’ve been trying to knit this pattern but I just can’t get it right.

I had never done it before but the pattern you gave has good directions, and it works. I’ll try to explain further.

The first thing you do is a M1R. There is a link to a video showing this increase HERE.

Look on the left as you scroll down for “M1R” it also says "I think of this as “M1B”. You pick up the strand running between the stitches on the right and left needles using the left needle and approaching from behind. Once the strand is over the left needle knit it from the front (like you’d normally knit). Now you have increased a stitch and that stitch is on the right needle. Slip it directly back to the left needle, no twisting or anything.

*Now you are ready for the next part. You are going to be working with the stitch you slipped back to the left needle and the stitch next to it. Put your right needle behind the left needle and skipping the stitch you slipped, knit into the back loop of the stitch next to the slipped stitch. (Be sure when you knit into the back loop of that 2nd stitch that you go over, not under the working yarn that is attached to the stitch at the tip of the left needle.) Do the whole process of knitting that stitch through the back loop, until you get to the slide the stitch off part. Don’t do that. (If you don’t know how to k tbl click HERE. This is a page from the glossary on this site. Scroll down to “k tbl aka K1 tbl, K1b”. There is a video link to how to do it there.)

Now bring the right hand needle to the front of the left needle and knit into the first stitch (the one you skipped) in the normal place. After you knit that stitch let both the stitch loops you have been working into slip off the left needle. You now have 2 new stitches on the right hand needle.

Now slip the stitch closest to the tip of the right hand needle back to the left needle (the working yarn will be attached to it). Now go back to the * and repeat.

The short version is to begin with a M1R, slip the increased stitch back to the left needle. * Knit the second stitch tbl, then the first stitch tfl, slip the stitch at the end of the right needle back to the left needle and repeat from the *.

Hint: Pay close attention and try to get in the habit of not stopping until you get to a spot where you can clearly see what the next step is. For me it was easiest to stop right after I slipped the stitch back to the left needle so that the working yarn was coming from the stitch at the tip of the left needle, and I was ready to repeat from the *.

I hope this helps you.

wow! I like this pattern a lot! I will make some for myself! I am pretty sure this new pattern (the lateral braids) will be “swatched” by me sometime this week to memorize it. Looks great for a lot of stuff, cardigans, for example. Thanks for sharing it!

hey thanks for the reply!
I was just trying to figure it out again on my own with no luck.

the problem i have is when i finish the sequence to make a lateral braid, i can’t figure out which loop to m1b to start the pattern over again.

OOOOOOOOHHHH i dont have to m1b except for at the very beginning…duh.

Right!! You only do that make one at the very beginning to get you started then, then you use the stitch at the tip of the RHN to slip back to the left needle to start the sequence again. Pretty slick. I’m glad you got it now.

Hi gustafc, and everybody…

I really like the pattern - so I just knit a little swatch (in the round).

the lateral braids, those are really nice. Just the finishing of the round I am not happy with. I think I can do better. But great idea.

I am not sure about the linen ridge stitch pattern. I really like it. But it did not come out in my swatch.

Can anyone help me?

The thing is knit in the round.
round 1: purl
round 2: wyib slip 1, purl 1 - repeat
round 3: purl
round 4: purl 1, wyib slip 1

the slipping goes purlwise.

Does anyone know if that instruction is right? If so, I am just too dumb to knit it

After you slip the stitch with the yarn in back, make sure you move the yarn to the front to purl the next stitch.

 that I did of course. But your comment makes me sure that this will work out some way. Maybe just the 2 yarns I tried it with are not optimal. I will just try again. This is just too pretty.

Thanks, suzee!

It may take also several rows for the pattern to start looking like pictures of it.

well, the instruction makes 8 rows (2 repeats). That’s how much I did in my swatches.
I tried with thin cotton, thick cotton, angora wool, acrylic yarn…

the pattern did not show this way. I will write the designer an email and ask her, if the instructions are right. Maybe something is wrong there? Or maybe it takes a certain ratio of yarn strength to needle size (I did try some, too.)

But the weekend will come and I will be able to try some versions until it comes out. This is the first pattern that does not want to play with me. It bugs me! :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s not you hyperactive. These directions will not make the stitch pictured. I’ve tried it flat, in the round, wyb, wyf, purling, knitting. Nothing works. I was interested in this pattern too, and the instructions for the lateral braid were so clear, but this is not working. I hope you get an answer from the designer.

When I searched for “linen ridge stitch” I can’t find anything that looks like this either, but I didn’t do an extensive search. I looked at Knitting Fool, and through all my Harmony Guides and one other and found nothing. Very interesting. :eyes:

Can’t wait to find out the answer!

:happydance: I am not too dumb, I am no knitting-fool!
I was really doubting myself.
I did try it flat, wth purling,
flat with knitting those rows
in the round with purling and knitting
(strange, because the pattern says “row” but the thingies are done in the round… so all was possible.
slipping the stitches purlwise (as it says) or knitwise…
wyif wyib and so on.
My husband was looking half amused, half worried.

I did find the designer’s web blog, though. So I will try to get clarification from her.
She did write that this was her first pattern making. Maybe something was just from memory and wrong?

I will try tonight if it works when you purl through the back loop…

My google and pattern listing search was no better than yours, either.

But an email might clarify it all. I will let you know!

hi!
I did get an email (and blog reply) from the designer.

She says that we got it just right:

knit in the round, even number of stitches.
row 1: purl
row 2: wyib slip 1 purlwise, purl 1 (repeat)
row 3: purl
row 4: purl 1, wyib slip 1 purlwise (repeat)

and she says that one has to do at least 11 rows to make it pop out.

Guess what: I tried it again. And I still did not get it. Well, my purl bumps are higher and lower that way. But I do not get the ridges to pop out that way. They are bumps that are off-set from each other. But no ridges.

I guess, the pattern might work better or worse with some yarns. And maybe the needle-ratio has to be loose or tight?

If anyone has any idea, I would be very interested.

Now that we know that it does work by these instructions I still ask myself: how

Oh, well, not everything can be just that simple!

You might try larger needles. Slip st patterns can be quite dense and need bigger ones to work right.

Hi!

I’ll try this out again and let you guys know. Thanks, suzeeq!

Can you post another link? I copied and pasted the first one, but it doesn’t work for me. Thanks.

Hi!
since links can only be posted with a minimum of 5 postings or so, some new members chose to “disturb” the link, then they can post.
This one only has a blank too much. Here you go:

and she says that one has to do at least 11 rows to make it pop out.

That is interesting because the pattern calls for exactly 11 rounds of the linen ridge stitch, repeat the 4 rounds 2X then the first 3. I am still dubious.

How are your experiments going hyperactive? Anything showing up when you do 11 rounds?
