Lap Shoulder Issue on a Newborn Sweater

Currently I’m working on http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/clemmies-sweater and I’ve just finished the portion of the pattern at the top of page 5 that reads:

“Decrease again the following
4th row, then next three
second rows 3 times, then
work decrease on WS: Purl to
last three sts, P2tog, P1.
Decrease every row until 8 sts
remain.”

My problem is I’m left with a sweater that looks like this from the back https://www.flickr.com/photos/91275538@N08/15482672992/in/photostream/lightbox/ and this from the front https://www.flickr.com/photos/91275538@N08/15482672922/lightbox/

The next set of instructions wants me to join the shoulder pieces - the long pieces on the sides to the back piece - the stitches on the holder in the middle - with CC yarn, but I do believe I screwed something up because this would be an extremely awkward join.

When I was knitting the shoulder pieces I knit about 37 rows, following the 8 row pattern set up on page four and then the incredibly confusing directions underneath that, that state:

“Decrease in this way the following fourth row, then following 3 second rows.”

Seriously, what have I done?

Thanks in advance for any help!

This is such an adorable little sweater. You’ll need to take out the 2 shoulders down to the place where you knit 16sts and then place the rest of the back sts on a holder. The little shoulder extensions should be much shorter. On the 16sts, do the first dec row (call it row 1), then dec on rows 5,7,9,11 and then rows 12,13,and 14. That’ll bring you to the required 8sts for the shoulder.
The center sts are slipped to another holder and the second shoulder is shaped similarly with the decreases at the beginning of the row instead of the end of the row.

There’s a mistake in the directions here at the top of page 5. It should read:
“Decrease again the following
4th row, then next three
second rows, then
work decrease on WS: Purl to
last three sts, P2tog, P1.
Decrease every row until 8 sts
remain.”

You, my knitting friend, are a genius!

Thank you so much for your kind help!

I will post a photo of the wearable sweater when it’s finished

Friend, you are too kind. Love to see this one!
