Laminaria How-to Question

I have found this gorgeous shawl on knitty, which I absolutely have to make.
This problem is that I can’t figure out how to increase from one stitch to three.
The instructions are as follows:

1-into-3 star: [K1 tbl, yo, k1 tbl] in next st. 1 st increased to 3 sts.

I just don’t get why it says k1 tbl twice, if it’s only one stitch.

So if there is anyone who has knitted this shawl or knows what this means could you help me to solve this mystery as well?

As the patt states, you’re creating 3 sts from one. (Working thru the back loop just twists the st so it’s oriented on the ndl differently.)

If you didn’t Ktbl 2x you’d only end up making 2 sts from 1. Insert right ndl, Ktbl but leave on left ndl. Do YO by bringing yarn fwd (sts still on left ndl). Do 2nd Ktbl. You now have 3 sts from 1: (or)

Ktbl=1
YO=1
Ktbl=1

3 sts from 1

Make sense?

Yes, it’s just twisting the stitch. You could try it without - knit, yo, knit - into the front, but it would probably make it look different.
